Frequently Asked Questions

Early Childhood Programmes

1. What is the youngest age a child is eligible to enrol in your centres?
Our Infant Care Centre is open to infants from 2 months to 18 months old.
Child Care centres are open to children from the age of 18 months to 6 years old. Our Kindergarten is open to children from the age of 2.5 to 6 years old.

2. My child is a first timer, should I accompany my child to the centre?

It is advisable that you accompany your child for only a few days and not more than a week. Once your child begins to interact with other children, leave and allow him to settle down on his own. Your continued presence may make the adjustment more difficult as your child would take a longer time to overcome his separation anxiety.

Parents of children from the age of 18mths to 4 years old may accompany your child for the first 3 days of school. If necessary, parents can make arrangement with the Centre to accompany your child for a maximum period of 1 week.

3. What should I do if my child refuses to attend the centre, or has fears and nightmares about going there?
Be calm and direct with your child. Emphasise all the fun he will have. Reassure your child that he will soon settle down in the new environment and make new friends. Meet up with your child’s teacher to discuss ways to help your child overcome his fears. By meeting with the teacher and speaking positively about the school and teacher, your child will gain confidence and feel that the teacher is someone he can trust, Allow your child a period of 2 weeks to 1 month to adjust to the new routine.

4. Are MERCU™ Early Childhood centres registered under any government bodies?
Yes, MERCU™ Pre-Schools are registered under the Ministry of Education (MOE) and MERCU™ Childcare centres are registered under the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

5. What is Baby Bonus and can be it used at your centres?

The Children's Development Account (CDA) is a special savings account for second child onwards that can be use to pay for a child’s school fees at approved institutions. The government will match dollar to dollar the amount of savings you contribute to your child’s account.

Children (second child onwards) born after 1 August 2004 will be able to open the CDA account. The CDA account is not restricted to be used only for this child but can also be use for his/her siblings education fees.

Effective from July 2005, the Government will match the co-savings in the following month after you have deposited money in your child’s CDA account.

You can use the savings in your CDA account to pay for fees at any approved institutions:

a) Child Care Centres
b) MOE-registered kindergartens and special schools, and
c) Early Intervention programmes registered with the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) and granted Approved Institution status by MCYS

Should you have further enquiries on the Child Development Co-Savings (Baby Bonus) Scheme, please contact the Hotline at 1800 253 7707 or email to mcys_babybonus@mcys.gov.sg. Alternatively, you may visit the website at www.babybonus.gov.sg.

6. How do I go about applying for Baby Bonus?
Parents must first apply for a Children's Development Account (CDA) at any OCBC or Standard Chartered banks. A CDA GIRO application form can be obtained from our centres. Filled it up and return to us for processing. The processing may take 4-6 weeks. Once approved, we will deduct your child's monthly fees from this account. Parents are to ensure the amount in the account is sufficient. Pending approval of Baby Bonus GIRO, parents can make payment through Baby Bonus NETS at the centre. Please bring along your OCBC or Standard Chartered NETS card for payment.

7. What happens if there is insufficient money in the CDA to collect fees?
It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that there is sufficient money in the CDA. Insufficient funds in the CDA upon deduction are subject to bank charges to the CDA holder. If there is not enough money in the CDA, parents will need to make payment of fees using other methods such as cheque, cash or NETS.

8. My child has some physical disability, does your centre accept children like him?
Special applications such as these will be reviewed and decided on a case-to-case basis. Certain disabilities require special attention and facilities for the child. Depending on the level of physical disability and needs of the child, we will have to assess if our centre is suitable and appropriate for the best interest of the child.

9. What is Government Child Care Subsidy and is it available at your centres?
