This year’s SuperKinder Camp was planned and organized based on the 6 dispositions set up by MOE which is P.R.A.I.S.E - Perseverance, Reflectiveness, Appreciativeness, Inventiveness, Sense of Curiosity and Wonder, and Engagement.
The Camp kicked off with the Amazing Race. The race focused on traditional games allowing children to have hands-on experience on the games that they have never played before. Each station requires children to work as a team and persevered to complete their task. The children certainly did us proud!
One of the highlights of the Camp was watching a soccer match live at the stadium. The participants had an enriching learning experience of meeting the players and what they need to do before the start of an important match. They learnt that support from friends or family is important and they too enjoyed themselves cheering and singing to the songs played on that day.
On 2nd day of the Camp, the participants were engaged in Art & Craft and Cookery activities. They developed inventiveness by learning the quantity/amount of ingredients used, the sequences and methods of making the VRUIT juice and Football sandwich. They acquired new vocabulary and developed their communication as well as their language skills with the facilitators and their friends.
The children were excited to make their own kite. There was a sense of curiosity and wonder in the air. The children were soon flying their kites at the Park. Even though some kites could not actually fly, there was great sense of achievement among the children.
The Camp has taught the children to be independent, being away from their parents and learn to adapt to changes and routines. Most of all, through the activities, the children were able to develop in their main developmental domains (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social and Language) and all emerge as Champions! .

In conjunction with Mother's Day, Kidz Meadow Childcare and Development Centres organised a Parenting Workshop cum Mother's Day Celebration on Saturday, 8 May 2010.
The programme kicked off with a parenting workshop, "Connecting in Love - The 5 Love Languages", conducted by speakers, Mr Tay Seow Yong and Mrs Tay Swee Noi, who are Family Life Educators with TOUCH Community Services. The workshop aims to improve parent's communication with their child's Love Language and will provide insights into their child's heart and mind. Parents could be seen very participative at the workshop as the speakers provided a lot of opportunities for sharing.
The highlight of the event was the appearance of the Celebrity Mums, Oniatta Effendi and Deanna Manto, who shared on their own experiences. They were also generous in providing valuable parenting tips. The kids, on the other hand, were engaged in a fun activity making a special heart-shaped paper handbag for their mothers filled with candies. At the end of the workshop, the children presented to their mums a lovely song and the special gift that they have made.
The kids had so much fun at the next activity, Dress-Up Mummy. They were given props such as scarves, lipstick, eyeshadow, bangles and other accessories to use their creativity to doll-up their mothers. The kids did a superb job with their mums and no accessories were left unused. The winner went to Mdm Sharifah Gorecki and 2 children.
The families then got ready for the next challenge - Treasure Hunt. Families were seen rushing to the different stations at Pasir Ris Park looking for clues to the treasure. Even though it was a hot day, the families participated enthusiastically and they had a wonderful time bonding to complete the task.
The programme ended with a picnic at the park. Some families brought their own picnic mat. After the light reception, prizes were given to top 3 families for the 2 games.
In all, the event went very well and both parents and staff enjoyed themselves tremendously. We look forward to the next PEPS activity.

Adventure Camp @ Jeram Besu Countryview Resort & Kuala Medang Homestay (Pahang) Taman Negara, Ulu Air and Lata Kijang were some overseas outdoor classrooms for some of our students in MERCU™ Private School in the past. Adding to that list, this year, we brought 35 students in the Prep Course for GCE ‘O’ and ‘N’ levels to Jeram Besu, Pahang. Making it even more special, this year, we added a homestay component to the adventure programme.
As part of our school policy, providing holistic education, we aimed to help students:
gain self-confidence
eradicate self-imposed fear
see the importance of camaraderie
be more focused
enhance creative thinking
learn through asking and clearing doubts
to better appreciate life and people in their surroundings
All these objectives were met through a range of activities like:
teambuilding games e.g. 'talisman', 'mass skipping', etc
paintball
abseiling
flying fox
rapid jump
white water rafting
night walk through the thick jungle of Pahang
campfire
self-reflection
This camp had brought most of the students together and had improved the attendance in school. The students’ results are improving tremendously too!
We thank all the facilitators and all other staff indirectly involved in making this program a very successful one. Our heartfelt thanks to Kuala Medang Homestay and Countryview Resort Park staff in extending their hospitality to us and the students.

Feel the gentle sea breeze, hear the rhythmic sea waves, admire the skies with no boundaries…
Explore the mysterious forest, caress the tranquillity of nature, experience the unforgettable fun...
Envy these moments we got to enjoy during the MERCU™ STUDENT CARE CENTRE (SCC) CAMP 2009.
In December, our Young Explorers embarked on a journey to a quaint island situated northeast of Singapore. Pulau Ubin, a rustic village which reflects the days gone by when life was simpler, is where our Young Explorers learnt valuable lessons linked to our TIES framework (T-Teamwork, I-Innovation, E- Etiquette and S- Skills) through effective activities.
Icebreakers and team activities allowed them to know and appreciate one another in the same team. Every bit of effort played a part in the team.
“Telematches marathon” stretched their physical and mental limits, as well as stirred up the friendly competitiveness in them.
“The King and I” and “The Battle of the Young Explorers” ignited the creativity in them as they worked together to create their innovative “models”. The light games kept the young ones going thrilled. What’s more? The “Night Walk” kept the hearts of the young ones pump faster!
Last but not least, the “Sports Marathon” would be something that the Young Explorers look forward to. Every Young Explorer went home with exclusively designed t-shirt at the end of the 2D1N camp.

Camp Odyssey 2009 proved to be an unforgettable experience for its participants as they had the chance of camping at Pulau Ubin from 21 to 23 November 2009.
The yearly camp specially planned for Primary 6 students entering into secondary school life aims to prepare the students in managing roles and expectations as a teenager, as well as exposing them to handle issues they may encounter in secondary school.
The participants took a ride on the bumboats to Pulau Ubin and settled at Pulau Ubin Lodge where they camped for 3 days 2 nights. The capricious weather did not dampen the spirits of the participants as they combed Pulau Ubin in the island-wide Amazing Race. At each station, they were tested on their physical and mental strength as well as teamwork and communication skills. Among the tasks were skipping as a whole team and ‘acid pool’ which requires the team to retrieve water with limited resources.
The highlight of the camp was cycling in the island to a destination where they would have their next activity. Though it was a long journey, the participants were still exuberant as they were briefed on ‘Raft Ahoy’ upon reaching the destination. They were tasked to build a raft with the resources given and the raft is then used for a race. For lunch, they had to cook their own meals over a fire.
Back at the campsite, the participants had a BBQ dinner followed by performance presentation. Each team had to perform a short sketch based on the different stories that were given. The night did not end there as participants then had night-walk, an activity that aims to develop self-confidence. At the end of the trail, they penned their thoughts about the experience, reflecting their feelings.
Participants were awakened early in the morning on the last day for a treasure hunt in the campsite. This treasure hunt lead them to the initiation activity, where the participants lighted up the word ‘Odyssey’, marking their journey of teenagehood. They were also presented with tokens to applaud them for their participation in the camp.
Prizes that were kindly sponsored by LDM Marketing, Daily Express Services and Deli Maslina were given out at the end of the camp. Zues clinched the Best Team Award, whilst the runner-up was Theseus followed by Poseidon. In addition, Syed Muhd Ibrahim Alatas was awarded Best Camper.

This year's K2 Graduation Ceremony was held on Friday, 13 November 2009 at NTUC Auditorium with the theme 'Our Earth, Our Future.' The venue was transformed into recycling works where the projects on the environment, done in October by the children, were put on display.
The event was a memorable and joyous occasion as 410 of our guests witnessed the K2 children graduate from pre school, to primary school. The event saw 160 K2 children from the 4 Kidz Meadow Early Childhood centres receiving their scroll from our Guest-of-Honour, Mr Wee Siew Kim, Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC.
The guests witnessed the donation cheque being presented by our MERCU™ Chairman, Mr Moiz Tyebally to AMP Director, Mr Anuar Yusop, amounting to a generous sum of $17,000 collected during the AMP Ready for School Fund Donation Drive.
After the speech by GOH, children from Kidz Meadow Buangkok kicked off the event with an energeitc opening performance. Dancing to the tune, The Earth Song by the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, the performance displayed human greed in destroying the forest, being the habitat of the wildlife.
Guests were further entertained by other performances such as Musical Percussions, Mother Nature is Calling Me, Funky Dance, The 3 Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and The Pulp and Al, which equally portayed the causes and effects of deforestation and importance of saving the Earth. Last but not least was the Speech & Drama performance, Sea Creatures are Our Friends, from Kidz Meadow Kindergarten which depicts the ugly scenes of human throwing rubbish into the sea and destroying the marine life.
This year's performances were not only colourful and entertaining but left a strong message to the audience on the importance of saving the Earth. The auditorium was immersed by the vow to save the Earth during the grand finale where everyone sang and danced to the song Heal The World.
We would like to thank all the parents who were present and the teachers and children who have worked relentlessly the last few months to make the event a truly magical one!

SAFRA Rumble was a race around Singapore and participants were to complete various tasks at respective checkpoints. It was a race for the youth to adults to put their knowledge, wisdom and teamwork to test. Participants were in teams of four and drove themselves through checkpoints to complete the race.
8 locations were carefully selected to be the activity base for SAFRA Rumble. Activities at each location were specially crafted in relation to the theme of locality. All activities permit participants to gain valuable skills and experiences such as Problem Solving, Geography, Logic Thinking, etc.
Starting from SAFRA Toa Payoh, each team was equipped with a Book of Decoders and a Score Card. Teams were to break Location Codes to detect the exact location of the checkpoints.
Each team had approximately 5.5hrs (including lunch break) to go to as many locations and collect as many activity points as they could. Activity points were determined by the difficulty level of the given tasks. Regardless of the difficulty level teams were only given 20mins to complete the tasks at all locations.
"SAFRA Rumble taught us teamwork, patience, listening and understanding especially among group members! Besides going through physical and mental hardships, we managed to learn more about some places in Singapore where we've not been before. All in all, it's like 'jalan-jalan' but in a faster pace. We enjoyed ourselves extremely are looking forward to participating such events in future! 100% FUN!"

“…3 days 2 nights. I thought it was going to be boring, dull and just unbearable. Instead, ever since I stepped foot on this island (Pulau Ubin), all my negative thoughts flushed away. The teachers and activities created for us were fun. The games (were) more different from what I had tried in secondary school and that’s awesome. Food was way more than reasonable. We were basically well fed. Overall I think this camp was a success! Loving you teachers always!…”
“…I really had fun during the 3 days camp at Pulau Ubin. I too, have learned a lot in the camp and managed to participate in all the activities. Besides being independent, I learned how to communicate with each other and teamwork. I am not afraid to make mistakes as I learn along the way. Even though there was some struggle along the way during some activities, we learned not to give up hope and still tried to finish the activities. My favourite activity was walking with our eyes blindfolded. It really teaches me to listen to instructions carefully and focus. I hope this will not be the last time I have such camps”…
‘…Instead of taking a bus straight to the (Changi) ferry terminal, we took the public transport to get the camp necessities for barbeque, food and drinks to last for 3 whole days. I think this strategy helps us to be more independent and also helps us to get to know each other before the camp actually begins. This helped us to work together as a team with much ease…”
“…What I like about the camp is the teachers are not too serious. They even joined us in the games. We treat them as someone we can relate to, talk to and at the same time, we learn a lot from them. They not only took care of us, but they also made the camp more fun, by cracking jokes and creating laughter and happiness. However, they can be serious when it comes to our safety or when one of us was misbehaving. I also learn a lot about myself, being a friend and also about life, through the activities which are not only fun but also educational…”
Odyssey Xtreme 09 saw a lot of changes. This year, the camp lasted 3 days and 2 nights (15 - 17 June 09), packed with more adventure learning activities. However, objectives of the camp remained and the learning points were achieved. Independence, resilience, creativity in problem solving, teamwork, planning, and the list goes on… All these were repeatedly emphasized throughout the 3 days and 2 nights.
Special thanks to the volunteer facilitators, Mr Shahfiran, Mr Syed Ahmad, Mr Imran and Ms Erlinna. Also, thanks to Mr Azman, General Manager of MERCU™ Learning Point Pte Ltd for contributing ideas and rendering assistance to the camp organizers.
Odyssey Xtreme managed to instill learning values and soft skills in the students while having fun in the outdoor classroom.

Knick Knacks @ Changi Airport - Primary 1 & 2
The lower primary kids had fun during the June Holidays as they set out on an educational realm in Changi Airport. They were divided into groups to complete 6 checkpoints which spans from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2. They are to complete activities at each checkpoint, testing them on their knowledge of English and Maths. At the end of it all, the team with the most points wins!
Incredible Race @ Sentosa - Primary 3 to 5
The event starts off at Vivocity where students have to break the code to lead them to the next station which was in Sentosa. Taking the Sentosa Express in their respective groups, students discussed the checkpoints that they intend to cover first in Sentosa.
There were 8 checkpoints in all for students to explore. There were a variety of activities testing their knowledge of English, Maths & even Science. On top of that, one of the task that students have to do was to ask for some foreign coins from tourists. They really had to brush up their communication skills and of course to put aside their shyness for this task. They had so much fun!!
Civic District Race - Primary 6
Esplanade was the venue where everyone was gathered first. Students were divided into groups and all groups were given a map. There were tasks at each checkpoint which the group will have to accomplish. Once they manage to accomplish the task, the Station Master will give the group the clue card to the next checkpoint. Groups are required to keep all the clue cards that they have collected and pass it to the Station Master at the end of the whole race. The tasks at each station covers all the three subjects that they are learning and there were even some mind-boggling logic questions which were a great challenge to the kids. All 20 groups finally gathered at the scenic Fort Canning Park for a welcome rest after an arduous day. At the end of the day, all the groups had successfully made their way through all 8 checkpoints.

The 2-days Kiddies Explorer Camp on 29 & 30 May organised for our Kindergarten 1 & 2 children from all the 3 childcare centres and kindergarten.
Kiddies Explorer aimed at developing the young minds towards exploring activities and experiments that involve Science. Their inquisitive minds and curiosity were put together to experiment interesting Science activities that evolve through water & nature. A total of 40 students participated in this year's camp facilitated by a group of teachers who were headed by Mdm Jumira and Miss Farizan.
The children were thrilled by the activities prepared for them on the first day. The children enjoyed building their own worm farm. Some were scared while others were excited to choose their worms and build the worm’s home which was embedded by layer of unfinished food.
The children looked forward to the water works experiments. They learned Science concepts such as float and sink as well as state of water i.e. freezing. The children got a chance to make their own ice lollies and they love to see them freeze from liquid state to solid.
In the later part of the camp, 20 parents participated in the Parent-Child Explorer race. The race tests their teamwork capabilities into solving certain clues and getting to certain points with their child in the fastest speed. Upon reaching the respective locations, the parents and child need to do some obstacles or answer some clues before they were given a star to proceed to the next point. It was such a great experience for some parents as they get to work alongside with their child in completing the race and most importantly, the bonding that they developed during the race. The parents had to piggy back their child from Pasir Ris Park to Kidz Meadow Kindergarten to finish the race.
Congratulations to Nur Sorfina from Kidz Meadow kindergarten and her father, Mr Shahfiran as the winner.
The second day camp was held at the Science Centre. The children were awed by the fascinating underwater world as they watch the sea monsters at the Omni max theatre. They enjoyed the movie. The children were then brought to tour around the Science Centre and the Eco Garden. They get to learn about plants and trees and discover lots of interesting names in plants and the way they grow. The children also enjoyed their time at the Water Works.
For the children, the last activity was the Einstein report in which the children were required to write down the Science discoveries that they have learnt for the 2 days. The 2 days camp was an eye-opener as well as a learning experience into the world of Science for these young explorers. At the end of the camp, the children not only get to learnt Science concepts but most importantly they enjoyed themselves working as a team and thanks to all the teachers who had planned interesting activities in this Science camp.

Even with the deepening economic crisis, parents still want the best for their child’s education and they made the right choice when they signed their child up for MERCU™’s ArtFul Venture, School HOliday Programmes (SHOP) 08.
By popular demand, Artful Venture brought back the programmes we offered last year and as expected, the support from parents were extremely overwhelming.
“Our engaging and exciting hands-on activities such as Shop Till You Drop, Recipes of Success and A-Math-ing Race, provided the opportunity for these children to develop not only valuable knowledge but also creativity, teamwork and independent learning!” said Ms Nurul Aini, the key trainer for Thinking Skills P1 – P2 & P3 – P4 for 2007 and 2008, “I was not surprised to see some children who attended our programme last year returning again this year. I myself love teaching Thinking Skills!”
Other highlights of ArtFul Venture include the PSLE Preparatory Programme which was a four ½ -day programme that equipped our kids with the necessary skills they needed as they enter Primary 6 next year. PSLE Prep too includes an outdoor trip to the Science Centre, where kids learnt about the World of Energy, Climate Change, Web of Life and Human Body.
Now 4 years running, MATHeculous offered the best drilling exercise to strengthen kid’s foundation in Maths. With the small tutor to student ratio, there were excellent interaction between our tutors and the kids, allowing our dedicated tutors to monitor the progress of every student closely.
We at MERCU™ are pleased that our aim to provide varied and interesting holiday programmes within a safe, secure and friendly environment were achieved. We hope you enjoyed our November 2008 School HOliday Programmes, ArtFul Venture. Do come back in 2009 to find out what we have planned for you in the next holiday!

Camelot Changi Adventure Centre was endlessly shakened from 15 November to 17 November 2008 by the cheers of Camp Odyssey’s 33 strong participants. It was a yearly camp specially planned for Primary 6 students entering into secondary school life. The camp aims to prepare the students in managing roles and expectations as a teenager, as well as exposing them to handle issues they may encounter in secondary school.
A series of icebreaker games welcomed the participants, warming them up for the camp. They were divided into four teams, Perseus, Poseidon, Theseus and Zeus. Armed with team cheers and self-made armbands, the teams were ready to roar through the camp.
Participants went through team-building games, which aim to instil teamwork, good communication skills and leadership skills. Amazing race at night set the pace as teams competed to reach the finish line first. Participants then had night-walk, an activity that aims to develop self-confidence. They then penned their thoughts about the experience, reflecting their feelings.
Dragon-boating on the second day was indeed an unforgettable experience, as many have not tried the water-sport before. The participants practiced teamwork as they paddled fiercely in the sea. Besides gaining water-confidence and teambuilding skills, they also enjoyed themselves through the race conducted.
What’s a camp without a campfire? On the second night, the participants gather around a campfire for a joyous session, singing cheer after cheer with much gusto. They also had to prepare a sketch as part of the performance for that night.
At the same time, a parental talk was also being held especially for the parents of the camp’s participants. The speaker, General Manager of MERCU™ Learning Point, Mr Azman Atan, conducted the talk focusing on the topic ‘ Teenage years, prime period for my growing child’. Parents gained interesting insights as Mr Azman highlighted the issues they may face during that prime period. Thereafter, the parents headed to the campfire to visit their children. The joy of seeing their loved ones was apparent as the participants shared their experience of the camp. Parents got the chance to watch the performance by the participants as well as gain feedback and exchange ideas with facilitators.
The initiation activity was saved for the last day of the camp. Just before sunrise, the participants lighted up the word ‘Odyssey’, marking their journey of teenagehood. They were also presented with tokens to applaud them for their participation in the camp.
Prizes that were kindly sponsored by LDM Marketing and Sports Partnership Pte Ltd (Lotto) were given out at the end of the camp. Theseus clinched the Best Team Award, whilst the runner-up was Perseus followed by Poseidon and Zeus. In addition, Danial Shah was awarded Best Male Camper while Naaziya was awarded Best Female Camper.
The event was a wonderful effort by the organising committee consisting of Hamdan, Siti Aishah, Fairuz and Adibah. Many thanks to the facilitators, Azman, Shahfiran, Khairuddin,
Khairani, Liyana, Nadzirah, Kasidah, Amal, Seri and Syahril for facilitating the participants throughout the camp.

The K2 Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 31 October 2008 was truly a magical experience for the 500 guests whom attended the event. The event saw 150 of our K2 children on stage to receive their scroll from our Guest of Honour, Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of National Development. It was certainly a proud moment for these children and their parents.
The new Kidz Meadow logo was then unveiled by our General Manager, Mr Azman Atan and MERCU™ Chairman, Mr Moiz Tyebally, witnessed by the GOH and AMP Executive Director, Mr Anuar Yusof. A cheque of $14,500, the amount of donations collected by parents for AMP's Ready For School Fund, was also presented to AMP Chairman. The donation will go a long way in assisting needy students and families to finance their education.
The auditorium and stage was transformed into a magical ambience with colourful costumes, lighting and lively props. Children from K1 and K2 levels put up a musical performance where the lead characters, Hansel and Gretel encountered adventurous and mythical journey. From the forest to underwater adventures, both characters went through obstacles and managed to escape with the help of characters they met along the way. The children were indeed STARS of the day. Kudos to the teachers and children whom have worked relentlessly to perfect the show!
The event ended with a grand finale and reception for the parents.

On 18 October 2008, Kidz Meadow Childcare @ Buangkok held its very first Open House. This was the ideal opportunity for parents to visit the new centre and meet the teachers and staff for questions and discussions.
Apart from the door gifts, parents received handouts describing the centre's operation hours, school fees structure and current promotions upon registration. They were also brought around the centre to tour and view the centre's different bays and classrooms as well as to find out more about the centre's programme.
Three side activities were conducted concurrently at the Toddler class. The children get to listen to stories written by renowned children's book author and illustrator, Eric Carle, during Storytelling Session. After which they were given colouring sheets to colour pictures or objects related to the stories told.
The children put on their creative caps during the Fun Construction activity where they had fun creating picture frames out of ice-cream sticks. They even added glitters and sequins to decorate their craftwork.
Children also enjoyed using the modeling clay given to create figurines such as elephant and fish during Dough Play activity. The younger children enjoyed using the cookie cutters to create 'gingerbread man' and 'star cookies'.
Face Painting proved to be popular among the children as they waited patiently in line for their turn to get their face painted with butterfly design (for the girls) or 'Spiderman' design (for the boys).
Our distinguished Guest-of-Honour, Mr Wee Siew Kim, MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, was also there to grace the occasion. He was given a tour and briefing of the centre's programme by MERCU™'s General Manager, Mr Azman Atan.
The Open House was a success as there was an overwhelming response from parents who turned up in masses for the event.

The Malay Heritage Trail is a road connecting man, commerce and culture, exploring centuries of rich Malay culture and heritage. Together with Bedok Town Secondary School on 28th July 08, we travelled this ancient journey to encourage students to explore places and uncover the hidden histories that contributed to the success of Malays today.
The Malay Heritage Centre (Kampong Glam) was fittingly chosen as the starting point of the trail which lasted for 2 hours. As the students explored the galleries of the museum, they learned about the early Sultans of Singapura, the Malay community around Kampong Gelam and their way of living.
After Malay Heritage Centre, students were introduced to Masjid Sultan, the first mosque in Singapore, as well as Bussorah Street which was once remembered as a trading hub in early Singapore. Here, students, teachers and MERCU™ facilitators who dressed up for the occasion in their Baju Melayu, teamed up for an activity mission named, “Lelong, lelong!”
At the end of the trail, we were pleased to have achieved the main objective of fostering the love and understanding of the Malay history and culture whose importance have been highly eroded due to our modern lifestyles.
The above was proven so when we gathered the students at the end of the session for a photo finale at Kampong Glam. Armed with the knowledge of their proud Malay heritage, the students punched their hands in the air and yelled, “Hidup Melayu!”
Our past might have passed, but our history lives on! We were glad that we delivered this project entrusted to us by the teachers of Bedok Town with success. May this journey be instilled in the hearts of the students eternally. “Hidup Melayu!”
Miss Hanim S N, the Malay Language teacher from Bedok Town Secondary commented, "MERCU™ had put up a splendid educational tour- Heritage Trail to Kampong Glam that the BTS students enjoyed throughly. The personnels were fun, knowledgeable and most importantly very engaging! TWO THUMBS UP for MERCU™ for taking up the challenge of doing Malay-based programme for the 1st time. Special thanks to Mr Azman, Mr Shahfiran and Miss Gamar for the facilitation and the success of the programme. A job well done!"

The event hopes to develop the children’s creativity through fun and creative activities planned by the teachers. A total of 70 students and 40 parents from Kidz Meadow Kindergarten took part in the activities planned for the day.
The day starts of with children’s workshop entitled Makes Your Story Comes Alive. The workshop aims to cultivate good storytelling habits and increase the child’s confidence to storytelling in front of audience. The children create their own props such as masks and puppets to make their story more interesting and alive.
Most of the children who came on that day did not want to miss out participating in the Colouring Contest as there were many attractive prizes. The workshop on Creative Clay also attracted many children. The children from Nursery 2 to K2 painted attractive figurines such as a fish, sports car and houses and decorate them with sequins.
The Magic Bottle activity received overwhelming response from the children as they created colourful sand themselves and poured it in their bottle. They added small ribbons to decorate the bottle to make them more attractive to be given as souvenirs.
While the children were carrying out the activities, two parental workshops were held for the parents. Distinguised speakers from Touch Community Services spoke on the topics, “The Power of Words” and “Transiting Your Child Effectively to Primary 1”. The talks were held under the Parent Educator in Pre School (PEPS) Programme under MCYS. More than 40 parents attended the talk and many went back with better understanding on how strong everyday words used with their child can affect his self-esteem and confidence. K1 & K2 parents had a better understanding of how they can assist their child with the transition from pre school to primary school.
Apart from the activities the centre also displayed the children project work. Parents viewed the picture gallery where they get to view pictures of their children during field trips and activities. New parents were brought around the
premise to view the classrooms as well as to find out more about the programme.
On the whole, it was a fun and exciting day for all whom participated. We appreciate everyone support and presence for the event!

Odysseus expedition was brought forward to modern times on 18 June 2008. Eagerly waiting for Camp Commandant to flag start the journey, GCE students from MERCU™ Private School began to have cold feet hearing what were expected of them throughout the 2 days 1 night program. Mr Shahfi gave them a hint; this program will be EXTREME as compared to the Lata Kijang trip some of them had last year. The students will have to find their way around the East of Singapore on their own after solving puzzles, breaking code words and reading maps. They are supposed to persevere and take part in all rigorous activities that had been planned out for them. In their hesitation, they got into their tribes, got the first clue, strategised and at 0830hrs sharp, off they head for the first location. The long-day had begun.
Four tribes were lead by the chief warriors, Ms Seri, Mr Shahfi, Mr Azman and Ms Nor’ain. They made their way by public transport to Kallang Beach where they brainstormed for tribe names and decorated their war bands. In no time, Spartans, TJR, Kamikaze and Vendeta were all geared up in their ‘garang’ bands. Before long, war cries were heard from afar.
They then battled their wits in the team building games. The tribe members grew closer to each other and understood each others’ way of thinking and working. They learnt to better their communication skills, developed their leadership styles, motivate each other and essentially stay focus to win every battle by planning and executing their approach in precision.
The 4 tribes further strengthened their teamwork and cooperation in the dragon boat orientation right after lunch. Although the rain was pouring, all of them, appreciated each others’ efforts in keeping in tandem with one another. The whole group was split into 2 boats, Spartans and Vendeta in 1 while TJR and Kamikaze in the other. Guess which boat housed the stronger rowers? Of couse, TJR and Kamikaze! They won the other boats in 3 races! Awesome!
The fun had not ended. It was just the beginning in fact.
The tribes got back into their groups. Clue cards were given out to them and armed with a small map, off they continue their journey from Kallang Beach to East Coast Park. They were all on foot!
Along the way, they stopped at few places to do some activities and take single, couple or group photos. Also, the tribes were given limited cash to buy food for their dinner and supper. Some of them even bought food for breakfast! This walking expedition had taught them a number of lessons. One student mentioned, “In school we are stressed with Maths, here we were tested with Trigonometry and budgeting! But it’s fun!”
By sunset, with dinner in their hands, the tribes reached the final checkpoint. TJR came in 10 seconds after the 3rd group, Vendeta. As a penalty, TJR surrendered $5 worth of food to Kamikaze, the champion in this leg.
Cooking their own dinner by the beach was another experience the students could not forget. Mess tins and solid fuels were given to every group. Voila! Some good cooks would be head hunted in no time!
Soon after, the tribes were tasked to squeeze their creative juices out to come out with a 3-minute skit. Indeed, these students are creative. They managed to tickle the judges with their skits and they made it difficult for the judges to decide which skit had the best entertainment value, yet feature most things that they have learnt in the day. Well done tribe members!
Half and hour before the clock struck midnight, the tribes were given codes to be broken for their next location. This time, all of them were on bicycle wheels. Briefing was done by the camp commandant who reiterated the importance of watching over their own tribe members and no violation of traffic rules are allowed.
From East Coast Park, Odyssey Xtreme took the tribes to Changi Coast Rd, Changi Village, Old Changi Hospital, Loyang Avenue, Downtown East and finally to Pasir Ris Swamp. The ride itself was challenging. The activities at those stations increased the difficulty level. Higher order and more physically taxing activities were conducted at the locations.
Tribes were made to test their strengths in tug-of-war at the first stop. Next, they were tested on their teamwork in acid pool.
At the next station, Old Changi Hospital, sweat ran down the spines of the tribe members. However, the spooky feeling did not stop them from completing the activity. One of the tribe members was simulated to be a war victim. The tribes were given 2 poles, a short nylon rope and a ground sheet to be made into a stretcher. They were to transport the injured member up the dark, steep sloped Hendon Road. 3 tribes managed to overcome their fear and the injured became well again. What a relief!
The tribes got their long awaited rest at the Shell station along Loyang Ave and they ride again to Downtown East. Following that, the tribes were made to go through another creepy, chilling activity. They were made to find a tower in the Pasir Ris swamp area, go up the tower and find a star each. All of them showed their guts and got the star.
By then, it was already 0400 hrs in the morning. All of them planned their own shortest route back to East Coast Park. Most of them looked tired when they finally reached East Coast Park, but the experience they went through, was simply amazing. None of them sighed a complaint and nobody whined for sleep. Well done guys! We are so proud of you.
Finally after breakfast and a quick shower to freshen themselves up, two buses took them to Orchid Country Club for Paintball. Another team game that tested their team dynamics and communications.
Kamikaze emerged as the champion of Odyssey Xtreme 08. They won $260 worth of Lotto goods and accessories. Best Female Camper award goes to Noriaini Samsudin of Kamikaze and Best Male Camper award goes to Hamry Jaafar of Spartans. Both of them got $70 worth of Lotto goods each. All prizes were sponsored by Sport Partnership Pte Ltd.
Odyssey Xtreme had lived up to its name for stretching the students’ physical and mental limitations. None of them thought they could do all that in 32 hours without sleep and proper food. Alls well ends well and the students got their well-deserved reward for a hearty lunch!
Special thanks to our event sponsor,

Sport Partnership Pte Ltd for their generous support!

P1 & P2: Vivocity
Vivocity is not all about food, shopping and play. Our students from P1 and P2 can prove that.
Toys R Us, Candy Empire and Ben & Jerry turned into various activity stations. Being at the playground meant working as a team for clues to answer the activity booklet. They learnt to navigate around the shopping centre by reading directories and even reading and understanding brochures for answers. The Skypark, known to them as waterplay haven, became a learning adventure. They discovered numbers and words, once tucked at the back of their minds when they were outdoors.
For most of them, it was a whole new experience they'll never forget. One thing for sure, it was definitely an enriching trail at Vivocity for all. You can view the pictures here.
P3 to P5: City Escapade
Sarah's birthday party would have been a disaster if not for MERCU's P3-P5 students.
Five hours before her party, Sarah realised she was missing a lot of items and was still unprepared for the huge celebration. Her invitation cards went missing, the party venue was not decorated, her birthday dress was still at the laundry and there were no snacks for her guests! Our P3-P5 came to her rescue and turned the big mess around.
Together with their facilitators, they ventured into Marina Square to uncover the mystery of the missing invitation cards, collected her laundry at Millenia Walk and even calculated her total laundry bill. Students applied problem solving skills while purchasing healthy snacks for the guests at Suntec City and double-check their list of task to ensure nothing was left undone. Not only that, students even managed to whip up a cake as a surprise for the birthday girl with a tight budget of $10. The cake and condiments were not only selected and bought by them, they even took extra care in decorating the cake for the special occasion.
They came back just in time to celebrate Sarah's big birthday bash. It was tiring but worth all the effort. That's what friends are for! Check out the photos here!
P6 Amazing Race @ Civic District
On Wednesday, 11 June 2008, the Primary 6 students were gathered at Esplanade for the P6 'Amazing Race' event. Students were given a clue card at each checkpoint where they had to decipher the code that leads them to the following checkpoints. At each checkpoint, students will put on their collective thinking hats as they will be challenged on solving mind-boggling logic Maths questions. After completing all the 9 checkpoints, students were gathered at the scenic Fort Canning Park for a welcome rest after an ardous day. Prizes were given to the first six teams who arrived at Fort Canning Park. The students had an amazing time.
Check out the fun times they had here :)

Our annual preschool camp kicked off with an exhilarating and hot 'Spice Trail' at the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden (Botanical Gardens) on Friday, 30 May 2008. Some 60 children from Pasir Ris Preschool, Woodlands Childcare and Yishun Childcare were involved in this HOT Summer Camp. The children were required to do activities at the different stations in Jacob Ballas Children's Garden and they certainly had an enjoyable time!
Back at Pasir Ris Preschool, children came up with a group banner and were then asked to do a presentation on their field trip. For some, it was their first time doing 'public speaking' to their friends and teachers. But eventually they managed to pull through despite their nervousness. Kudos to all our brave participants!
What's a camp without a campfire? And yes, the team of dedicated staff managed to come up with their own version of campfire, with the children singing some campfire songs and doing their group's cheer. It must have been a tiring and enriching day for the children but hold on..there's more coming up the next day!
The children woke up with an engaging morning workout before they set off for a Hot Race telematch at the Pasir Ris Park. The second day involved Art & Craft - Pencil Holder made with spices and Cookery session on toast using cinnamon.
At 2.00pm, parents started walking in to attend a Parenting Workshop conducted by Mrs Joyce Ewing Chow from Touch Community Services. During the child-bonding workshop, parents were given tips on how to maximize their child's potential and interesting parent-child activities they can do with their child at home. It was an enjoyable and light-hearted session with the trainer. Towards the end, prizes were given to children and parents were invited to a tea-session and view their children's work done during the camp.
Indeed, the children enjoyed themselves tremendously and we are sure they will remember this experience for a long time. See you kids at the next camp!

Cef Jr. a new 8-episode pre school cooking series on Suria will be shown on every Monday, starting 26 May at 7pm.
The concept for the kids' cooking series is an experiential journey for children where educational concepts like counting, colours, shapes, and alphabets can be learnt in a fun and interesting way. Led by popular and kid-friendly host Chef Bob (from Chef Skuter), kids will be guided in a safe and controlled environment to learn how to cook simple, tasty and nutritious meals that they can try at home with their families. In October 2007, AMP-MERCU™ Student Care Centre (SCC) @ East Coast Primary School had a visit by MCYS officers, Ms Ong Boon Sze and Mr Kelvin. Photos of centre’s activities and classroom set-up were taken. The visit was fruitful and some of the centre’s pictures were selected for the student care centre info kit.
AMP-MERCU™ Student Care Centre was then informed by MCYS officer that our centre had been selected for an MCYS roadshow. We are to showcase a typical school-based student care centre where the school converts a CCA room to an SCC and to play host to the invited guests, who are principals, vice-principals, head of departments and teachers. The event was held on 29 February 2008.
Honoured to be given this opportunity to showcase the centre’s set-up and programmes, the countdown to the date of the roadshow was both exhausting and exciting too. Our centre was transformed with new mural paintings and colourful wall displays.
The School Principal, Mrs Evelyn Ong , Vice Principal, Mrs. Lim and other supporting staff, namely, Operation Manager, Mr Teo and the Administrative Manager, Ms Shirley Poon had given us full support before and during the event.
The event kicked off at 12.30pm with the arrival of MCYS officers who organised the roadshow. Preparations and setup were all in order before the arrival of the guests. Our students, equally happy and anxious, were full of support for the event.
Our honorable guests started arriving at 1.45pm and were ushered to the meeting room for a briefing session. The first presentation by an MCYS officer, was on the rationale of having school-based SCC and the need for more in the near future when most schools go single-session. Next, a representative from MOE explained on the collaboration between the two Ministries and the support given to schools to run a school-based SCC. AMP-MERCU™ SCC then shared on the set-up of the centre, milestones and programmes and services offered. AMP-MERCU™ SCC has been in operation since 1999.
After the briefing, our guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet reception. The guests and host were given opportunities to mingle and better understand the student care setup and its related services.
Thereafter, the tour of our centre began. There were displays of students’ project work along the corridors any of the guests fand pictures of students engaged in activities. Mielded in questions ranging from enrolment size, teacher-child ratio to more details of the centre set-up.
We were glad that things went well and that the roadshow was successful, very informative and fruitful indeed!
